The Valentine’s Day season provides a great time for students to practice their writing in a creative format! Check out these creative writing ideas for Valentine’s Day!

Create a Heart Character

Give students a heart template and have them turn the heart into a creative character by adding a face, hair, clothing, and accessories.

Students can then give their heart characters a name and make a character sketch to use for writing an original story that takes place on Valentine’s Day. They will enjoy thinking about their character’s family, likes and dislikes, and more. Click here for a template to use— or create your own!

Students can share their character creations with small groups or the class. Consider having students pair up and use their two different characters to inspire a new story. Students could pretend that their two characters have just met… and this is what happened next. Find the Valentine’s Day Create a Character Activity ready-to-print-and-go right here!

Make a Valentine for Your Favorite Character

For this activity, students will create a Valentine’s Day card for a favorite, fictional character. The card should appeal to the character, and students should focus their message to the character on why they like about the character.

Students can consider the following questions:

  • What do you like about this character?

  • How did this character impact you?

  • What would you like to say to this character?

  • What would you like to thank this character for?

Students can decorate their cards and then present them to small groups or the entire class. OR— have students hang them around the classroom to make it festive for Valentine’s Day.

Candy Heart Message or Story

Give students an assortment of candy hearts with messages on them. Then, have students create a Valentine’s letter with the challenge of integrating 3-5 candy hearts into their message. Students will glue the candy hearts into the letter and will then present their letters when finished. Let the hilarity ensue!

To focus who the letter is for, consider having students write to a friend, a classmate, a parent, or even a teacher to say thank you for their friendship and support.

Alternatively, allow students to write a creative story that takes place on Valentine’s Day using the candy hearts as parts of their sentences. Students can also complete this same activity in small groups or with a partner.

There are lots of creative ways to use candy hearts during February!
